iOgrapher At Fit Expo

A healthy dose of video tech By Ko Maruyama

iOgrapher At Fit Expo

A healthy dose of video tech

iOgrapher is a remarkable product that can turn your iPad or iPhone into a professional field tool for production. Last year, attendees at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) visited the iOgrapher booth to see the framework in action.  Since then, iOgrapher has been showing up wherever people are documenting their with iOS video.  This weekend, iOgrapher flexed some muscle at The Fit Expo in Los Angeles, showing up where most people are talking about healthy lifestyle options.

Undoubtedly iPads and iPhones are ubiquitous, as the latest sales mete out. What kinds of benefits do iOgrapher bring to these devices?

One thing that's really clear - the cameras on these devices are getting so good, they're starting to rival the quality and resolutions of some pretty high-end cameras out there. The other thing that's clear - it's not that easy to shoot stable video, with good lighting and sound on an iOS device. And that's where iOgrapher comes in. We make the shooting experience that much better by effectively turning your iPhone or iPad into a video rig! With handles for steadi-cam shooting, shoes to mount lights and mics, standard tripod mounts - we really transform your iOS device!

There is a huge range of people who are part of "fitness" in Los Angeles, but not everyone thinks of themselves as a filmmaker.  Who do you think is an audience for iOgrapher at Fit Expo?

As we saw firsthand at the show, the fitness market is huge, but it's also segmented. We spoke with a lot of personal trainers who are adding video playback services to their clients. But because they're not filmmakers, nor do they have huge budgets or expertise to adopt high end video equipment, they clamor for a solution that enables them to deliver some high quality services with the devices they love most - their iPads and iPhones. We also spoke with several fitness bloggers or vloggers. These people are also adding video to their content, but need a much more affordable approach to capturing and sharing video to the web. When they saw the iOgrapher, they got so excited!

What topics do you think Fit Expo attendees could be shooting?

From the bloggers and vloggers, to the press who cover events like FitExpo, they're shooting the many competitions that are held at this very event. Many are even reporting on the news at the show - vendor news, new products, new fitness trends. There are also a lot of fitness celebrities here; I'm amazed at how many attendees are awkwardly holding their iPhones over the heads trying to get a shot. But again, when they saw iOgrapher, their mouths fell open. It was really exciting for us!

One of the benefits of an iOgrapher is the ability to shoot with better lenses.  Being able to get a lightweight iPad into a training scenario will allow you to review and analyze a training session or workout right away - That can be a valuable tool.

That's exactly right. Many of the personal trainers who stopped at the booth wanted to pick up a fully tricked out iOgrapher rig - and they were amazed at how light it is. So, an iOgrapher rig paired with some of the powerful apps and services out there, such as Hudl or apps like Coaches Eye, they suddenly have a very compelling service to add to their portfolio. It's an exciting time for these trainers - they can be so much more innovative without breaking the bank!

You mentioned some apps that you like to use with iPad.  Which ones do you think work well for a sports/fitness audience? or is there a difference in the way you shoot?

As I mentioned, services like Hudle for coaching, or Coaches Eye, are very powerful. They enable you to take video of a session, play it back immediately for a client, mark up the screen to point out potential flaws in motion or routines, and then send that video to the client so they can watch it whenever and however they want. It's very powerful.

You've shot several sporting events with iOgrapher gear.  How does covering an event with iOgrapher and iPad / iPhone differ from the traditional hand-held video camera approach?

Well for one, the most notable and remarkable difference is the mobility. The ability to grab your entire rig, which weighs maybe a pound, and run to where the action is. And with multicam apps like Switcher Studio, you can literally create multicam environments right on the field, with one iPad/iOgrapher acting as the 'control booth' and directing the other 'cameras' on the field. It truly is a game changer!

Many fitness trainers are starting up their own YouTube channels or video blogs, giving others a way to easily consider a healthy lifestyle without getting too far away from the internet.  How are trainers and educators using iOgrapher in the classroom, in the dojo, in the yoga studio?

You're absolutely right - there has been explosive growth on YouTube alone in  the number of Fitness related channels. The ability for trainers, teachers, educators in the classroom, to set up an iPad or iPhone, using an iOgrapher fully tricked out with light and sound - and this was so big for so many people I talked to at the show - the ability to mount to a tripod and set up in the room or studio. That is so huge for them. They can finally shoot very high quality video, without having to hire a professional crew or have any expertise themselves. We're really trying to democratize this whole process for anyone, anyone who wants to create video. From consumers to pros, we have something for you. It's accessible, affordable and actually quite fun. We're very proud and humbled by the reactions and feedback we've received in the short year that we've been shipping iOgrapher.

And we're still creating, brainstorming and designing. We have SO many ideas and are excitedly moving things forward in fun, innovative new directions!

Thanks a lot guys. In person, it?s really easy to see how the iOgrapher is making out iPad and iPhone videos look professionally shot.  Whether users decide to upgrade to additonal lights, microphones or lenses, even the base model iOgrapher improves the quality of how you are shooting with your iOS device.  Check it out online at http://www.iOgrapher.com  to find out when the new case styles will be available.  Of course, you can find out where iOgrapher will be next by following them on twitter @iographer.
