Importing Splines in Maxon's Cinema 4D A supplemental for vector art import / Illustrator CS By Ko Maruyama If you're familiar with Adobe's Illustrator, and create splines for use within Maxon's Cinema 4D, and now use the latest version of Adobe's products?the CS versions, you might be wondering how to get your spline data into the 3D application. Additionally, if you're only using Photoshop CS and want to deliver your spline data to Cinema 4D, you might want to check these quick tips out to help economize your workflow.

If you haven't looked at Rob Garrott's instruction for the legacy Adobe Illustrator import (Adobe Illustrator version 10 and earlier), check it out here: Rob's Extrusion Tutorial.

ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR CS

Many of the lessons included in Rob's article still apply to Adobe Illustrator CS.  The major deviation from these guidelines is in the saving process.  Actually, you won't save at all.

1. In recap, make sure that your rulers indicate the (0,0) position value of your illustration.

2. Delete all guidelines from your Illustrator, unless you want them to import to Cinema 4D as spline data.

3. Save a version for use within AICS.  While this CS version will contain all of the data that you'll need to edit the original file in AICS, you won't be able to import the spline data into the 3D aps.  Additionally, in AICS, there is no "Save As" provision for Illustrator 8 (the stable spline format for 3D application import).

  • 1- Save
  • 2- Name ("filename-4CS.ai")
  • 3- Select Illustrator options

4. Under the File pulldown menu within Illustrator CS, use the EXPORT feature.
